This small collection of nineteenth century documents is comprised of a number the land records, receipts and wills of two generations of the Coulburn family: Elijah (d.1853) and Hetty Coulburn (d.1865) and their son Sampson , all of Worcester County, Md. Elijah and Hetty lived on a parcel of land known as “Dower,” and upon Elijah’s death, the land was deeded to her son, who owned a number of parcels of his own in Worcester County, including “Fox Harbor.” In 1854, Sampson received a patent to consolidate a number of his properties as one. These include parts of “Golden Purchase,” “Sod,” “Bevan’s Choice,” “Aquintico Savannah” and “Greenland.” Sampson was the executor of both Elijah and Hetty’s estates. Throughout the collection, the name Coulburn appears in a number of variations: Colburn, Coulburn and Coulburne. For example, the payments made on Hetty Coulburn’s estate include two different spellings of her name: Coulburn is spelled both as Coulburn and Colbourne. Spelling issues also arise in the overlapping spellings of Sampson and Samson, who may or may not be the same person. The receipts of Sampson Coulbourne (Colbourn)

The earliest article is a sale advertisement for a house in Salisbury, Maryland. Ocean City postcards from around the 1970s show hotels and aerial views of Ocean City. There are also menus and postcards from restaurants in Ocean City. The Wicomico High yearbook, from 1927, includes pictures of the freshman, sophomore, junior and senior class. Two high school diplomas from Wicomico County from 1920 and 1926. Farm records, shareholding records and family books give insight to the life of a family living around the Lower Eastern Shore. Finally this collection includes a number of pens and pencils listing the names and addresses of local businesses. As well as information on the local Salisbury baseball team in 1948, local campaign items and cards from local attractions.

The family names with the most records in the collection are Parker, Davis, Dixon, and Hearn who all owned properties in the same district in what is today northern Wicomico County. The land records show transactions in Worcester County and what later become Wicomico County after 1867, specifically the northern portion of the Parsons District.

The papers of Edwin C.M. Dickey document his early life in Wicomico County, Maryland through his military career and ultimately his personal interests when he was a resident of the United States Soldiers Home in Washington D.C. The materials date from 1898-1963 with the bulk of the material 1921-1963 documenting his post-war life interests. Edwin traced his genealogical roots as far back as John Dickey of Chester County, Pennsylvania who had military ties with George Washington in the American Revolution. Edwin studied and wrote on a wide range of subjects including world and American history, philosophy, and science. Further, there is evidence within the papers that Edwin was an early 20th-century Free-Mason. Also included within the records are a series of scrapbooks, ledgers, correspondence, and photographs.

Holloway Photograph Collection

Dr. William James Holloway was born in Salisbury on January 29, 1873. The Holloway Photograph Collection depicts the formative years of the Maryland State Normal School from 1925-1928, Holloway’s family life and activities in the 1920s, and Wicomico County Public Schools in the 1910s. In 1908, Holloway became the Wicomico County Superintendent of Schools, during which he also earned his Master’s Degree in Education from Columbia University. By 1917, he was named the State Supervisor of Rural Schools and then the Assistant State Superintendent of Schools in 1922. Holloway’s proposal for a normal school in Salisbury came to fruition in September 1925; he was named superintendent and principal of the school. Holloway resigned on October 5, 1934 and passed away on Saturday March 14, 1936.

The diary of Isaac J.F. Handy, written in 1892, documents his daily experiences as a servant in the home of Mrs. Frank Haseltine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Handy, an African American man born in Wicomico County in 1850, the son of George and Susan Handy, recounts his everyday experiences writing about his activities inside and outside of the home. From time to time, he comments on national events, specifically, the 1892 Presidential election of Grover Cleveland. His monthly salary and expenses are noted in the back of the diary.

Jessie Morris Jones Wicomico High School Collection

The Jessie Morris Jones collection has a variety of paper materials. There are yearbooks, retirement notes/cards, class reunion pamphlets, grade/student roster books, pamphlets on graduation procedures, a folder with information on a charter government, and newspaper articles. The Yearbooks and the newspapers associated with the yearbooks range from 1941-1971. The retirement notes/cards include letters and cards to Mr. Jones from students and faculty discussing his retirement, as well as, invitations to retirement banquets and other events. The class reunion pamphlets are mostly invitations and programs, with a few booklets notating what happened to the graduating class after high school. In that group were also two paper weights with a picture of the school and the dates of the graduating classes. There is a large assortment of grade/student roster books from the years 1929-1969. Within those books are lists of names of the students as well as their progress in the class. The graduate collection is a series of programs, procedure lists, and a few booklets on where students see themselves in the future. A large binder is dedicated to articles and policy books on the charter government, or “home rule”, instituted in 1963. Finally the last groups of materials are newspaper articles on a variety of topics. Some are the WiHi student run newspaper clippings, other articles deal with the hiring of new teachers, retirement of old teachers, and school board elections. There is a folder in this group dedicated to all the teacher and school board officials’ retirements from the years 1948-1978.

These documents reflect the impact that preservation regulations had on the Delmarva Peninsula specifically, Wicomico and Worcester counties as it evolved from 1960 - 2014, and the entirety of the papers span from as early as 1894 - 2014. Burnett served as a legal advisor for these organizations. His papers contain numerous board of director reports which reflect by-law drafts and final copies, logistics proceedings regarding agency consolidation, and documents entailing litigation representation including the enforcement of environmental regulations. Organizations of note include Committee to Preserve Assateague Island, Wicomico Planning, Zoning, and Development Committee, and Greater Salisbury Committee.

The L.W. Gunby papers consist of the personal papers of L.W. Gunby and of his family and of the records of his businesses on the Delmarva Peninsula from 1845 to 1991. The collection contains financial ledgers and hundreds of letters, deeds, mortgages, stock certificates and tax returns, offering insight into a century of economic life on the Delmarva Peninsula. It includes the testimonial of Rev. George Handy Wailes on the occasion of Gunby’s selection as Salisbury’s Man of the Year in 1936. Wailes, the Visiting Professor of Hebrew at Princeton Theological Seminary, honors Gunby’s business and civic contributions to the city of Salisbury. The collection also includes a scrapbook commemorating the 100th Anniversary of Gunby’s Hardware in 1972.

Robertson as Mar. 20, 1936. A handwritten synopsis is provided on each of the postcards on a separate sheet of paper, author unknown. Also included are copies of Robertson’s wills, savings, checkbooks, land deeds, and funeral arrangements. Ship's logbook documenting trade and travel of the schooner DAVID F KEETING and brig ALICE; the former transported goods from South Carolina and Florida to harbors in New York, Boston, and Baltimore while the later transported goods from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to Hampton Roads, Virginia. The log, 1867-1874 documents the sea fairing voyages including weather, cargo and boat activity. Activity also logged includes the commanders or masters including Levin Granger and William H. Smoot. Ship's crew members include Cleophas E. Bennett of Sharptown, Wicomico County, Maryland. The log was eventually utilized as a scrapbook by Bennett's siblings, Cora, Dexter, and Hattie.

The papers of Wade Thompson Porter document his life and experiences, beginning with his childhood on Maryland’s Eastern Shore in the late 1800s until his eventual retirement in the 1940s. In addition to newspaper clippings and photographs, the collection includes several decades worth of personal correspondence which address contemporary social and political issues and recount Porter’s childhood memories of late-19th century rural America. Also, there are personal documents related to Porter’s service in the Spanish-American War, as well as his Masonic membership. A considerable amount of material focuses on genealogical research of the Porter family and their descendants, including comprehensive Porter and Twilley family trees dating back to the mid-1700s.

This collection includes family research, publications, photos and historical materials from the Wicomico County Free Library (now Wicomico Public Libraries). Series 1 is family research related to the Dashiell family and some materials related to other families.The Dashiell family documents consist of hand-written family history manuscripts and family trees. Two folders contain other family history research and records. The second series is historical materials. The United Fund of Wicomico County records are documents related to contributions by local businesses and the contents of scrapbooks for yearly fund drives. The 1856 school workbook contains mathematics notes. The legal records are an index of Wicomico County civil court cases, a Works Progress Administration record of workers on the Johnson Pond Spillway construction, and photo reproductions of manuscript records of postmasters of Wicomico and Somerset Counties. The Creative Works are two sheet music booklets, prints of Wicomico County sketches, and a list of winners of the Salisbury Award. The books are a pictorial history of the American Civil War from 1862, Delaware American Revolution bicentennial booklet on Caesar Rodney, A Handbook for Delmarva Archaeology, and a facsimile reproduction in book form of The Proceedings of the Constitutional Convention of 1776 and First Maryland Constitution. Series 3 comprises publications of local interest and content. Series 4 consists of photos and images associated with the Salisbury and Wicomico County area. Some Words About Preservation was a publication of the Maryland Historical Trust that gave news on the status of historical site preservation. Tidewater Times contains articles related to Eastern Shore topics, as well as advertisements of area businesses. The collection of journals and journal articles consist of Maryland and Delaware archaeology articles and journals, two copies of Shellfish Digest from winter 1979, and four issues of the Old Somerset newsletter from 1985. Series 4 contains photos and images of Wicomico County and Salisbury dating from the 1890s to the 1970s.

The William Leonard Collection consists of an 1862 Civil War diary of Col. William J. Leonard, who commanded the Purnell Legion. The Diary has been transcribed while the last will and testament is in the original writing.

This collection contains one poster showing the former Winter Place Carriage House Museum in Wicomico County, as well as two newspaper clippings from 1977 documenting the closing of the museum and subsequent sale of the carriages. The Show Horse Training Center and Carriage House Museum at Winter Place once featured dozens of rare and ornamental carriages before the owner became bankrupt, causing everything to be auctioned and the land to become a county park.
